We couldn’t appreciate it while we were actually living it, and now that we can, we want to go back to give it the respect it deserves. It’s always this way. When that which is gilded is revealed for what it is and torn down, we still only remember the gilding. When the doors were left open for the leaves to blow in from outside, we began to realize that the place itself would soon disappear. What made this place special had already begun to fade away. We looked around and noticed just how many monitors had burned out. When it was just one, we didn’t care. It seemed to spread like some kind of virus though, and before we knew it, there was nothing left to admire. We attempt to keep these things for ourselves, though they will eventually burn out too.
The luxury of carelessness. A luxury we never knew. We got brief glimpses of turquoise and salmon tiles reflecting radiance from extravagant skylights. By the time we were old enough to drive ourselves to these places, those fluorescent corridors had long gone dark.
